Corrupt registry, virus infection, outdated device software, corrupt driver software are among other reasons which lead to printer driver problems. Understanding that it’s a pain to go through such errors and not able to print in turn, here are some workarounds which you would like to give a try to fix them.
Perform one step at a time to check whether the problem has been fixed or not. Provided that a step doesn’t solve your problem, then only move on to the next step.
Update the printer driver regularly to help keep your device functioning properly. Bug patches, security updates, and other fixes included in driver software updates help remove software glitches and ensure that your device communicates with your computer properly. The best way to look for driver updates is from the printer manufacturer’s website whether HP, Canon, Dell, Brother, or Lexmark etc. Since the printer manufacturer rolls out newest driver updates so you should always download them from its website.
Another way of updating the printer drivers is from your computer’s software update feature. If you using a Mac computer, click the “Apple” menu and select “Software Updates”. Look for the driver updates related to your printer and then download and install them.
If you are using a Windows computer, you can look for updates through Windows Update. Click the “Start” button, click “All Programs”, and click “Windows Update”. Download and install the available printer updates.
P.S. You should always install driver software with admin permissions to avoid facing errors.
Uninstall and then reinstall the printer driver. To do so (if you are using a Mac), click the “Apple” menu, click “System Preferences”, and click “Print & Fax Preferences (or you may find “Print & Scan”)”. You will now see a list of the printers installed on your computer. Click the <-> button (under the printer list) to uninstall the printer. Exit this window. Now navigate to the “Library” folder, “Printers”, “PPDs”, “Contents”, and “Resources” to display a list of the installed drivers for that printer on your Mac. Select and then drag and drop the driver software to the “Trash” folder. Click “Empty Trash” to completely get rid of the driver software. Exit all the windows and restart your Mac. Search for the latest driver updates now and install them.
If you are using Windows, click the “Start” button, right-click “My Computer” or “Computer” (if it’s Windows 7), select “Manage”. On the Computer Management window, click “Device Manager” and look for the printer driver software. Right click the printer driver, click “Uninstall”, and confirm the changes. Restart your computer to complete the action. Thereafter, you can search for and install the latest driver software for your printer.
If you continue to face error with your printer driver, change your print format. To do so, you will need to open up the printer properties page. Look for your printer, right-click it and then select “Properties’. Change the background from the existing to “white” to fix the problem. If you want to change any other format setting, change it and then save changes. When done, check back whether the problem has been fixed or not.
Run an automated printer troubleshooter (Mac does not but Windows has designed automated troubleshooter software to help automatically diagnose and fix printer problems). You can download the automated printer troubleshooter from the Microsoft website and run it on your machine with admin permissions. This should fix most of the printer problems including driver software and help your printer work smoothly.
Registry errors play a big role in creating printer problems. Thus you should fix those registry errors to fix printer driver problems. First back up your registry (whether Mac or Windows) and then run a free or paid registry cleaner/repair program to help clean the empty, unused, damaged registry keys and subkeys etc. from the registry program.
Virus infections often conflict with printer driver installation or updates and hence cause errors. Thus you should run a thorough (full) scan on your computer to detect and remove any unknown/known virus or malware running on it without your knowledge or consent. If your antivirus is unable to remove the culprit, take help of a virus removal expert.
